Skyward actively seeks SBIR and STTR opportunities, including partnerships, for a wide variety of technical developments.  Skyward has teamed with a number of industry and university partners to pursue technology solutions for our customers.

Skyward’s awards have included several fire protection devices:

  • Light-Weight, Low-Cost Fire Barrier – fire barrier for US Navy ships utilizing intumescent coatings and advanced insulation materials to save lives and increase ship survivability.
  • Passive Dry Bay Fire Extinguishing System –lightweight, low-cost, low maintenance fire protection system based upon intumescent-coated “instant firewalls”.  This device, which has been successfully demonstrated in live fire testing, can respond to multiple fires in multiple locations and still respond if an element of the system itself is damaged.
  • Wireless Fire Detector – rapid, lightweight, wireless fire detector system for future and legacy aircraft and other vehicles.  Technology avoids false detection in combat aircraft applications and has been adopted in an ongoing fire protection system development.

Other Skyward technology development efforts included the design of an integrated instrumentation suite to document blast and fragmentation in warhead characterization testing.  A goal of this system is to eliminate the use of Celotex bundles for fragment data collection – a traditionally costly, tedious, and labor intensive process.

Skyward has also provided subcontractor assistance to a number of partners during their technology developments, lending expertise in test & evaluation and commercialization.  In one example, Skyward assisted our partner, MSI, Inc., in developing requirements and proof-testing a Portable Missile Miss-Distance Identification System (PMMDIS) for automatically determining missile miss distances during free-flight missile performance and countermeasure evaluation testing.
